1. A-list Old Hollywood and Royalty Once Summered in Famagusta
From the 1950s through the 1970s, Famagusta’s Varosha district was the Monte Carlo of the Eastern Med. Beneath its golden sun, the world’s elite came to play.
Among them? Oscar-winning Sophia Loren, the timeless Italian beauty, Brigitte Bardot, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, and Princess Margaret, sister to Queen Elizabeth II. They were not the only ones. Glamorous names from international cinema, aristocracy, and art flitted in and out of beachside villas and marble-clad casinos. Yachts bobbed in its marinas. Champagne fizzed under the palms. Varosha was the epicenter of elegance and escapism, a playground for the glitterati.
Though memories of those wild parties are now frozen in time, their essence lingers—alive in Cyprus’s hot summer nights, echoing through the island’s vibrant nightlife whenever a throwback classic hits the dance floor.

2. The Jet-Black Flamingo of Larnaca
Among the flocks of delicate pink flamingos that grace Larnaca’s Salt Lake each winter, one lone bird captures the world’s attention year after year: a melanistic flamingo, jet black and mesmerizing.
Rare and regal, this dark-feathered enigma stands out like obsidian against a sea of rose. Birdwatchers and photographers flock from across continents to glimpse it. Some call it a genetic marvel; others, a mystical omen.
Like the black sheep of the family—those who never quite fit in—this flamingo reminds us that there’s beauty in being different. Sometimes, standing out is exactly what makes you unforgettable. It’s a quiet celebration of authenticity, dancing in full glory among the crowd.
Either way, it is a living legend, as wild and wonderful as the island it returns to every year.

3. A Poisoned King and the Fall of the Lusignans
The history of Cyprus reads like an epic. And nowhere is that truer than the tragic tale of King James II, the last Lusignan monarch.
After marrying the Venetian noblewoman Caterina Cornaro, James died suddenly—rumors swirled of poison. In his place, Caterina ascended the throne, and Venice gained a strategic stronghold in the Eastern Med. Whether through romance, realpolitik, or ruthless design, this was a quiet coup of continental consequence. While on paper Caterina Cornaro is known as the last French Queen of Cyprus, many stories linger about where her true loyalties lay.
Thus ended French Lusignan rule on the island—and Cyprus became a Venetian stronghold, ushering in a new chapter of Renaissance influence and maritime power.

4. Europe’s Longest Golf Season—and Its Hidden Paradise
If your idea of paradise includes rolling greens under sapphire skies, then Cyprus may surprise you. Thanks to its year-round sun and mild winters, it boasts the longest golf season in Europe.
Tucked away in the north, Korineum Golf & Beach Resort is more than a golf course—it’s an escape. Overlooking the Mediterranean and backed by the Kyrenia mountain range, the resort is dotted with carob and olive trees, giving every swing a backdrop of natural poetry.
Named among Europe’s best-value resorts by golf expert Chris Bertram, Korineum is also a destination for wellness, weddings, and lazy terrace lunches under the bougainvillea.
After all, what better company could you ask for at brunch with friends than lighthearted chat, mimosas in hand, and the glistening Mediterranean as your backdrop?

5. Birthplace of the Goddess of Love — A Greek Deity of Olympus
It is said that where the waves break near Petra tou Romiou, Aphrodite rose from the foam.
The ancient Greek Mythology believes this island was touched by divinity—the birthplace of the goddess of love and beauty herself. From this rock, she emerged in a swirl of sea spray and starlight, stepping into a world that would forever be enchanted by love.
To this day, visitors wade into the waters hoping for a bit of her eternal magic.

6. Brandy Sour: The Royal Cocktail in Disguise
Behind the polished bar of the Forest Park Hotel in the Troodos Mountains, a cocktail was born that would become Cyprus’s national drink—and a symbol of clever hospitality.
The story goes: in the 1930s, King Farouk of Egypt, a frequent visitor and devout Muslim, wished for a drink that looked like lemonade—so he could enjoy it in public without scandal. Drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited in Islam, and a King is expected to lead by example at least in the public eye.
The result? The Brandy Sour.
A refreshing, subtly complex cocktail that blends Cypriot brandy, local lemon squash, soda water, and bitters. A drink fit for a king—literally.
