Top 5 Beaches in the Cleanest Waters of Europe

By a Lifelong Seeker of Sun, Sand, and Peace

A Mediterranean Secret No More

If there’s one place in Europe where the sea whispers peace, and the shorelines stretch into stories of ancient gods and golden days—it’s Cyprus. This island isn’t just sun-drenched and scenic. It’s officially home to the cleanest beaches in Europe, with over 97.6% of its waters rated as ‘excellent’ by the European Environment Agency in 2023.

More than 55 beaches in Cyprus bear the prestigious EU Blue Flag, a badge of honor for water quality, safety, and environmental excellence. It’s not just data—it’s paradise quantified.

In a world obsessed with sanitizing everything, Cyprus beaches need no PR—they’ve simply stayed pure.

My Top 5 Beaches in Cyprus — From Sea Turtle Sanctuaries to Celebrity Haunts

1. Alagadi Turtle Beach, Kyrenia

Where Nature and Views Touch
This is my personal sanctuary. Alagadi is not just stunning—it’s alive. Nestled beneath the majestic Kyrenia mountain range, the beach is one of the few Mediterranean sanctuaries where you can witness loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green sea turtles nesting in the sand.

During the season, watch baby turtles take their first steps toward the sea—an experience that will realign your soul. Hundreds of tiny sea turtle hatchlings, smaller than the palm of your hand, emerge from their nests and make their way to the sea. The hatching season is drawing attention from all corners of the world. Witnessing these precious creatures embark on their life journey is a mesmerizing experience, and it’s a memory you’ll cherish.

Add a lunch at the beachside restaurant, followed by a round of golf or a rejuvenating spa massage, and you’ve got a lifestyle, not just a beach day.

2. Golden Beach, Karpasia Peninsula

The Edge of Europe. The Heart of Serenity.

At the easternmost tip of Cyprus lies the Golden Beach in the protected national park of Karpasia. Wild, vast, and largely untouched, it’s the longest uninterrupted stretch of soft sand on the island. Expect golden dunes, translucent water, and silence that sings. This is where you come to hear yourself again.

For most, this is the number 1 destination, but for me, when overall travel time and convenience are factored in, it comes in at number 2 on my list.

3. Nissi Beach, Ayia Napa

The Socialite’s Shoreline

Yes, it’s lively. Yes, it’s Instagram-famous. But Nissi Beach earns its hype. With turquoise lagoons, shallow sandbanks, and beach bars playing chill-out tracks, this is the place to flirt with freedom. Whether you’re a digital nomad catching rays between Zoom calls or a young investor popping champagne, or a retiree Nissi balances pleasure and pulse.

4. Long Beach, Iskele

The Endless Embrace of Sand and Sky

True to its name, Long Beach offers miles of uninterrupted coastline. It’s perfect for morning jogs, sunset walks, and those long, lazy days where time seems to pause. With its well-kept promenade and family-friendly vibe, it’s also a growing hotspot for digital nomads.

5. Varosha — Arkin Palm Beach

Where History Meets Horizon

Once known as the “Monaco of the Mediterranean”, Varosha was the playground of royalty and Hollywood elite in the 1950s. Think Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren strolling its grand boulevards. Today, the reopened Arkin Palm Beach offers a poignant blend of history and high-end leisure. To walk these sands is to feel the echoes of opulence and resilience.

Bonus points for the breakfast spread at Arkin Palm Beach, you will need to skip lunch after it.
