Unique Brunch Experience at Villa Latomia in Kyrenia
A New Brunch Experience
Two weeks ago, I found myself immersed in an unforgettable brunch experience—one steeped in history, breathtaking waterfront views, and an elevated sense of indulgence, right in the heart of Kyrenia.
The icing on the cake? Private on-site parking, a rare luxury in the bustling city center.

A Culinary Delight Beyond Expectations
I ventured to the newly opened Latomia on a sun-drenched Sunday, an impromptu daytime escape with a touch of romance. Cyprus had fast-forwarded from spring to summer overnight, and I welcomed it with open arms.
What I initially anticipated as a delightful yet predictable brunch with a view quickly transformed into an experience unlike any other. This wasn’t just breakfast—it was a feast.

A Curated Open Buffet
The open buffet-style dining concept surprised me with its meticulously curated selection of dishes. The lineup featured everything from poached egg avocado toast to local pastirami and halloumi combinations, all fresh, warm, and irresistibly plated.
Coffee was rich and aromatic, while an endless array of desserts tested my willpower. I must confess—I succumbed to the temptation of buttery croissants, velvety chia pudding, and a stolen spoonful of lava cake from my companion’s plate.

A Villa with a Storied Past and Architectural Grandeur
Latomia’s charm extends far beyond its menu. The villa’s architecture took me completely by surprise. As someone who usually does their homework before visiting a place, I was caught off guard by the estate’s historical significance—and I loved every second of my discovery tour.

Designed by a Master Architect
The villa, originally built in 1933 by renowned British architect William Douglas Caroe (1857–1938), is a living masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Caroe, the son of the Danish consul in Liverpool, sought solace in the Mediterranean climate due to health reasons, making Cyprus his winter retreat from 1928 onwards. It was here that he designed and built Villa Latomia, his personal residence, which harmoniously fuses British colonial style with local Cypriot architectural influences.

A Step Back in Time
Touring the villa was like stepping into another era. The grand spiraling stone staircases, majestic fireplaces, and expansive windows framing Mediterranean vistas all reflected the vision of a master architect.
The roof terraces, embraced by the sea breeze, hinted at the villa’s future potential—imagine candlelit rooftop soirées under the Kyrenia stars.

Latomia: A Living Museum
Villa Latomia isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a living museum. Its design echoes elements from Caroe’s previous projects, including:
– St. George’s Church in Troodos
– The Early Byzantine Chapel of St. George within Kyrenia Castle
– The Dome Hotel restoration in Kyrenia
The estate also showcases the intricate craftsmanship of Cypriot stonemasons, whose hand-carved details are etched into the very foundation of the building. Each fireplace bears Latin and Ancient Greek inscriptions, whispering stories of a bygone era.

A Legacy Etched in Stone
Caroe’s work in Cyprus extended beyond his personal retreat. His passion for architectural conservation led him to restore historical sites across the island, leaving an indelible mark on its architectural identity.
Caroe passed away in 1938, his final resting place in the Old British Cemetery in Kyrenia—a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to preserving beauty, whether through design, restoration, or innovation.
Today, Latomia is more than just a dining destination—it’s a place where history and hospitality intertwine effortlessly. Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture aficionado, or simply a traveler in search of a brunch with soul, this hidden gem in Kyrenia offers an experience that lingers long after the last sip of coffee.
For those who appreciate not just where they dine but the stories behind the walls that surround them, Latomia is a must-visit. And for me? It’s a place I’ll return to, time and time again.
Live a Heartbeat Away from Paradise
Cyprus isn’t just a travel destination—it’s a lifestyle choice of the Mediterranean. Whether you’re looking to invest, retire, or relocate, this island offers tax efficiency, high-quality healthcare, and one of the safest living environments in Europe.
