Famagusta City

Famagusta is a coastal town with a famous trade harbor, the largest student population in North Cyprus, and a historic Venetian Town with castles and churches scattered across. Old-Town Famagusta is home for historical landmarks where the touristic entertainment is integrated into the old-town Famagusta’s traditional shopping bazaars and historic buildings.

The old town is home to the famous Gothic era Saint Nicholas Cathedral, which has a very strong resemblance to the Notre Dame of France, built by the French occupiers at the time. Coronation of the Lusignan rulers as kings of Jerusalem took place here. It is where French queen Caterina Cornaro, the island’s last monarch yielded to the monopolizing powers of the Venetian Republic and abdicated peacefully in 1489. Today her residence welcomes many tourists every day.  

The old town of Famagusta is built in a castle famously named as the Othello Castle as the British writer William Shakespeare is known to write his play in there. It is lit with special effects at night time and receives high interest and visits by literature lovers during day time. Walled city Famagusta is filled with small cafes, wine bars and historic buildings. Many tourists visit the old hammams, venetian palace ruins, dungeons, twin churches and the palace gardens every year.

Old town bazaar has traditional jewelry stores, restaurants that serve international and local cuisine. Some famous patisseries like Petek have been satisfying the sweet-tooth cravings of many for decades on the same alleyway. For food my recommended local dishes would be; Turkish ravioli or Sultan’s delight which is marinated meat served on an eggplant paste with cheese topping. For local deserts; my recommendations will be ‘kadayif’ which is a tasty syrup covered pastry or ‘gullac’ which has milk soaked thin rice sheet layers.

Downtown Famagusta is home to the Eastern Mediterranean University which is the biggest university in North Cyprus with international students booming the student rental demand during the education season. Downtown Famagusta has a popular avenue that has shopping centers, popular restaurants, bars and leisure centers primarily occupied by the local and international students.

Kyrenia City


Kyrenia is the cultural, economic, and tourism center of North Cyprus. It is the second-largest city in terms of population and the largest in terms of tourist and ex-pat population in North Cyprus. It is home to numerous hotels, nightlife, 2 ports, and 2 marinas.

There are 16+ luxury hotels with large casinos in Kyrenia and it hosts an annual culture and arts festival with hundreds of participating artists. It is home to 4+ international universities with a student population of 15,0000+ and there are 8+ hospitals and dozens of advanced fertility clinics.


Kyrenia has been the tourism center for casinos, entertainment, students, and medical purposes for 30+ years hence the multimillion-dollar hotels, universities, seaports, and countless businesses are already attracting the largest tourist and ex-pat community compared to any other city in North Cyprus. Bellapais Abbey and Kyrenia Castle are also on the top of the list for historical landmarks of Cyprus and both are must-visit destinations.

The best private hospitals in North Cyprus are all located here. Kyrenia Suat Gunsel, Medical Port, Kolan British Hospital are just a few of the good ones that come to mind. Because of this, the government has the largest funding to Kyrenia when it comes to tourism, real estate, infrastructure, etc. Private investors are always chasing to get the best piece of land for the next 5-star hotel, university, hospital, or golf complex. There is a big competition among the investors to get a slice of this city that has the highest tourist numbers every decade since the 70s.  



Kyrenia also has seen the largest real estate development among the cities in North Cyprus. This development started from the old town walled city emerging from the old harbor and spread across a straight line to East and West with Eastern towns of Bellapais and Ozankoy gaining higher popularity. The reason for the linear growth is that Kyrenia has a mountain range on one side and the Mediterranean sea on the other, the city and towns lay parallel in between the two. With the steady growth and popularity came the second marina and the third one is on the way.

Next on the line of this growth will be the Esentepe and Bahceli Towns to the East of the city. These towns are the last remaining towns of suburban Kyrenia that is being developed. Following them, the Kyrenia ends and Famagusta begins. This is why we expect a very strong appreciation for this region, the land scarcity. It is the next piece of land to merge and become part of the expanding Kyrenia City.

Kyrenia mountain range

Kyrenia Mountain range has many hiking trails among the pine trees. Due to the geographical positioning of Kyrenia, the mountains are parallel to the sea and every hilltop on these hiking trails gives amazing views to the sea overlooking the green forests. On villages of Karmi and Bellapais, small churches from the British era are located where one can watch amazing sunsets from. The highest point in North Cyprus is the famous ‘five fingers’ mountains, the mountains resemble five fingers and according to a Hero Myth; when Dhiyenis Akritas came to save Cyprus from invaders, he grabbed the mountains emerging from the sea and gave it’s unique shape to it.

Kyrenia mountains are famously home for hidden crusader castles. The most famous ones are Buffavento, St. Hilarion and the Kantara Castles. Saint Hilarion Castle famously inspired the Walt Disney when he was designing the castle in the Sleeping Beauty, attracts many visitors every year. Many tales about these castles told by the locals makes this experience even more magical.


East Kyrenia

Today, East Kyrenia towns are home to scenic nature with the luscious green Kyrenia Mountain range on one side and the beautiful Mediterranean Sea on the other. These suburban towns are located 15 minutes’ drive to the center of Kyrenia City and 38 minutes’ drive from the Ercan International Airport.
